Strengthening Schengen: Bulgaria and Romania's Partial Integration Marks a Milestone
Bulgaria and
Romania are set to take a significant step towards closer integration with the
European Union's Schengen area on March 31, 2024. This development signals a partial
inclusion, granting these countries the benefits of seamless travel by
eliminating border checks and inspections for air and sea travel between each
other and other Schengen member states. The anticipated result is a more
efficient and expedited movement of people and goods, fostering growth in
tourism, trade, and business activities within the Schengen area.
Having
joined the European Union in 2007, Bulgaria and Romania had been in discussions
about entering the Schengen area, but a concrete political agreement was
necessary to make this a reality. With their imminent inclusion, the Schengen
community will expand to encompass 29 nations, consolidating its strength both
internally and on the global stage.
While travel
by air and sea will experience the benefits of a borderless Schengen zone, land
travel is yet to be fully streamlined. For the time being, complete border
checks will be conducted between Bulgaria, Romania, and the rest of the
Schengen area. Agreements to facilitate smoother land travel are expected to be
pursued in due course.
In this
partial integration, Bulgaria and Romania will continue issuing national entry
visas, as opposed to Schengen visas. Although no specific date has been set to
address this matter, there is optimism that 2024 will mark a milestone in the
progression towards a unified visa system.
To address
security concerns, measures pertaining to police and judicial cooperation have
been implemented along the borders of Bulgaria and Romania, as well as with
neighbouring countries. These measures aim to fortify the Schengen area against
potential security threats, ensuring the continued strength and resilience of
the border-free zone.
Romania and
Bulgaria will become part of the Schengen area in March. Until then, if you are
planning to visit these two countries for tourism or business, look no further.
