Anticipated Inclusion of India in the UK's Safe States List to Tackle Illegal Migration
The United Kingdom is reportedly considering including
India in its list of safe countries as part of an effort to fortify its
immigration system, aiming to discourage individuals seeking illegal asylum and
immigration. This move would grant the immigration department the authority to
reject candidates who entered the country unlawfully, emphasizing that those
arriving without following proper procedures will not be allowed to stay.
In response to this issue, a proposal for the change has
been presented in UK parliament with the objective of promoting legal
immigration. If a country is added to the safe list, travelers from that nation
are less likely to face prosecution under Section 80AA of the UK's legislation.
This adjustment is anticipated to facilitate the repatriation of nationals in
accordance with the law. The proposal is part of the Illegal Migration Act
2023, currently under consideration in parliamentary discussions.
The current list of safe countries includes Albania,
Switzerland, and member states of the European Union (EU) and European Economic
Area (EEA). The UK government anticipates benefits from the Illegal Migration
Act, foreseeing a reduction in criminal activities and deterring travelers from
undertaking perilous journeys, such as crossing the English Channel in small
boats.
Countries often maintain lists of safe or low-risk states
for various purposes, and the potential inclusion of India in this list
signifies the UK government's perception of it as a secure nation, free from
human rights violations. This could lead to the repatriation of asylum seekers
to India or potentially to another third country.
In a parallel development, Canada is expected to
introduce a citizenship program targeted at undocumented immigrants, aligning
with its goal to welcome 500,000 immigrants annually by 2025. The program aims
to address the vulnerability and risk of deportation faced by illegal
immigrants, including those with expired visas who have stayed on despite legal
documents for work or study. This initiative is pursued despite Canada facing
housing challenges and elevated inflation rates, recognizing the crucial role
of the immigrant population in bolstering the country's workforce and fostering
economic prosperity.
